- Access
There are three principal access routes (either via Lima, Arequipa, or Cuzco) to the Haquira project as graphically indicated in Figure 1 and summarized in Table 1. The most direct access is from Cuzco via gravel roads for a distance that varies between 176 and 235 km depending upon which of several alternative sub-routes is taken. Travel time by 4-wheel-drive vehicle is 8 to 9 hours. Alternatively, from Arequipa, access is via paved and surfaced gravel roads for 270 km to Yauri, then by gravel roads via Santo Tomas for 220 km to Chalhuahuacho and an additional 10 km to the project site. This route requires about 12 hours travel time. Maintenance of the improved gravel roads is minimal between January and March; the height of the rainy season.
